The Fun of Discipleship

By April 28, 2016No Comments

Many of us carry this equation around in our heads and hearts:

discipleship = hardship + struggle + sacrifice

If I’ve learned anything from our four months of making meals for the youth at the ShortStop shelter, it’s that discipleship can actually be fun too.

Last night, with the radio cranking out the latest pop hits, nine of us gathered in the fellowship hall to make a delectable meal from scratch. In just 90 minutes, we whipped up Chicken Tetrazinni,Cheesecake Brownies, and Broccoli Marinara. We even had some pizza to nibble on ourselves!

The easy joy of these cooking sessions reminds me of Jesus’ words in Mathew 11:
Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.

May we all discover the freedom, the lightness, and the fun of discipleship!
