Message: “Unhrehearsed Christmas Pageant” from The Hillside Community

Rev. Tom Hathaway - January 11, 2026

A Defiant Light

In a world that insists strength, force, and fear are the only things that work, Jesus tells a different story. Drawing on a surprising scientific discovery and a hard look at our current moment, this sermon explores what Jesus meant when he said, “You are the light of the world.” Not as comfort, not as sentiment, but as a defiant claim about who we are and what actually has the power to change the world.

Scripture References: Matthew 5:14-16

From Series: "A Million Little Miracles"

This four week series invites us to experience the world with awe, wonder, and a renewed sense of enchantment, learning to slow down and notice what we usually rush past. It is about paying attention to the small, overlooked moments that quietly shape our lives, from unexpected kindness to moments of clarity and connection. Together we will revisit familiar stories in fresh ways and practice seeing the ordinary world as something alive with meaning, beauty, and hope.
