WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IN WORSHIP

Revolutionary Spirit

250 years ago, the Bible was at the center of the argument for American revolution. Some texts fired people up. Others had to be argued around, twisted, and explained away. In this series we’re going back to those same texts — the inspiring ones and the uncomfortable ones — to ask what they actually say, what was done with them then, and what they still demand of us today.

Guilty. Now Let's Pray.

Romans 13 has been used to justify slavery, the Third Reich, apartheid, and family separation at the US border. It's the text progressive Christians quietly avoid — and that silence, it turns out, hands the passage over to exactly the people who've done the most damage with it. This sermon goes straight in: the Greek, the history, Paul's actual situation, and the question of what you do when a text has been turned against your neighbors. There are at least two honest ways through it. You might find a third. Either way, you won't be pretending it isn't there anymore.

Scripture References: Romans 13:1-10
