It’s official: our first ever Pecha Kucha Coffee Hour was a hit. For those who missed it, Pecha Kucha is a rapid-fire presentation style: 20 slides, 20 seconds each. No rambling, no fluff, just a burst of ideas and plenty of laughter.

The presentations were unforgettable:

  • Bernadette sounded the alarm about the menace of the Bradford Pear Tree (though for the record Hillside Community Church does not condone acts of arboreal arson).
  • Satchel introduced us to the Society for Creative Anachronism and generously offered himself up for a good whack with a rattan stick.
  • Eric took us on a tour of the heavens, showing how centuries of stargazing helped ignite the scientific revolution.
  • Kamal reflected on the lessons of his dating life and the critical importance of cream cheese therein.
  • Brian capped it off with a brilliant, completely unscripted talk on improv.

The best part, though, wasn’t the content. It was the community. People leaning in, laughing out loud, kids running through with muffins. It felt alive. It felt joyful. It felt like church at its best.

Thank you to every presenter, every attendee, every person who made coffee or helped clean up. You made the day what it was. And a special thanks to Brian, whose instincts and creativity brought Pecha Kucha to Hillside in the first place. We are absolutely doing this again!
