Message: “The Better Part” from Rev. Tom Hathaway

Rev. Tom Hathaway - March 1, 2026

The Better Part

Jesus seems to pick a side in the Mary and Martha story — and it's the one who's just sitting there. That doesn't sit well with a lot of us, especially in progressive churches where doing the work of justice is basically a sacrament. But what if Jesus isn't actually ranking contemplation over service? What if the real issue isn't what Martha is doing, but the resentment and scorekeeping underneath it? In this sermon, we take an honest poll, name a real tension, and look at what it means to ground whatever we do — serving, praying, showing up — in love rather than something else.

From Series: "The Gospel of Luke"

The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Jesus in a way that feels surprisingly modern. It’s researched, stitched together from real voices, and honest about its own process. It centers people usually left out of religious stories: women, immigrants, the poor, the doubters, the ones on the edges. This series explores how Luke’s gospel came to be and what it says about a God who works through imperfect people, contested decisions, and messy history to bring healing, justice, and hope. You don’t need to have faith figured out to belong here. This is an invitation to explore a story that has shaped the world and still has something to say about ours.
