Lament is one of the least practiced but most biblical forms of prayer.
Lament is not complaint per se. It’s not despair per se. Rather, it’s the act of bringing raw grief, confusion, and anger directly to God rather than packaging it into something more presentable.
And the Psalms are full of it – nearly a third of them are laments! Which means that the biblical tradition spent considerable energy insisting that honesty before God about our hardest feelings is not a failure of faith, but an expression of it.
Lament assumes that God can handle what you are actually feeling. It assumes the relationship is strong enough to bear the weight of your worst moments. It does not tidy things up or look for the silver lining. It simply tells the truth about where you are and trusts that God is present there.
Over and over, the Psalms suggest that God prefers that honesty to our politeness.
