When the school day ends, a lot of kids in our neighborhood come here. Ready, Set, KIDS! runs its Medford after school program in our building at 144 North Street, and on weekday afternoons the place fills up with kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders who have a great deal to say and very little interest in saying it quietly. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
The after school program serves children in grades K through 2 from the Brooks, Missituk, and Roberts elementary schools. It gives working families a safe, warm place for their kids to land after the bell, with staff who know them and a building that’s become a second home. Families can choose anywhere from two to five days a week, which makes it easier to fit around real schedules instead of ideal ones.
What sets RSK apart is what happens beyond the basics. They offer small-group enrichment classes right here in the building, and the lineup is the kind of thing adults quietly wish they’d had at that age: hands-on science and engineering, Spanish immersion, art, cooking, and even a business lab for young entrepreneurs. The cooking class ties each kitchen skill to a children’s story, so kids learn to chop and measure while also learning something about where their food comes from. The science class leans on curiosity, with kids asking questions, testing ideas, and building things. These classes are open to children ages 5 to 8, including kids who aren’t enrolled in the after school program, so they’re worth a look even if you only need an afternoon or two of fun.
