WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IN WORSHIP

The Characters of Christmas

As we enter the holiday season, we’re spending time with the ones who first felt the shockwave of Jesus’ birth. A teenage girl brave enough to say yes. A bewildered carpenter learning to trust what made no earthly sense. Shepherds who lived on the edges of everyone’s attention. Magi who followed a strange star beyond the borders of their own traditions. Each one found the same truth rising in their lives like early light creeping over a horizon: this good news of great joy is meant for all of us.

Love with a Backbone

In this week’s message, we listen to the remarkable 1865 letter of Jourdon Anderson, a man formerly enslaved who answered his old enslaver’s request to “come back to work” with wit, grace, and moral clarity. Paired with Paul’s short letter to Philemon, it becomes a conversation across centuries about what real reconciliation looks like—not niceness, not denial, but love with a backbone: love that tells the truth, demands change, and holds us accountable to the healing it proclaims.

Scripture References: Philemon 1:1-25

OUR VISION

Grounded in Love

In a time of increasing partisanship and division, Hillside Community Church boldly imagines a world in which people of every race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, gender expression, and sexual orientation can come together to meet, talk, listen, share, explore, and grow in love.

Each week, through worship that draws on the deepest insights of the Christian scriptures and through active programs of community service and outreach, the Hillside community works to build just such a world.

If you are looking to be part of an action-oriented, love-centered Christian community, we’d love to have you join us!
