You have heard it said (perhaps even from a pulpit): Happiness is fleeting and circumstantial, a product of what happens to you. Joy, by contrast, is deep, lasting, and rooted in God. One is human. The other is divine.
It’s a nice, tidy distinction. However, it’s also one the Bible itself never actually makes.
The Hebrew and Greek words translated as joy, gladness, happiness, and delight overlap considerably and are often used interchangeably.
What the Bible does distinguish is the source and object of our delight. Delight in God, and in the things God delights in – love, justice, mercy, the flourishing of the vulnerable – tends to be durable. Delight in things and circumstances tends to be fragile. That is a distinction about what we are delighting in, not about the emotion itself.
So it’s worth asking: what is it that actually brings you joy? And is it the kind of thing that lasts?
